How do I get rid of a couch?

A couch is a little larger than your average castaway! So it's a bit harder to toss in the trash or put in a bag to take to Goodwill. But don't be intimidated by getting rid of your old sofa, you have a few options:

Sell it: Turn your couch into cash by listing it on online resale platforms, marketplaces, or your local classifieds!

Donate it: If your couch is still in good condition, consider reaching out to local charities or organizations that accept furniture donations.

Hire a junk removal service: Hiring a professional junk removal service can save you the hassle of dealing with a couch yourself. They'll handle the heavy lifting and disposal for you.

Where do I sell my couch?

There are a lot of great places to sell furniture, online and in real life! We recommend Googling first to see what's most effective choice for your specific area.

Here is our list of go-to's for getting paid to get rid of your sofa:

AptDeco AptDeco is an online marketplace for buying and selling used furniture.  Sellers can list items for free, and AptDeco provides a pricing tool to recommend a competitive price. Buyers can purchase items online, and AptDeco handles the rest.
Ebay eBay is an online marketplace that allows individuals and businesses to buy and sell a wide variety of products – including furniture of all kinds!
Facebook Marketplace Facebook Marketplace is a digital marketplace that allows users to buy, sell, and trade items with other people in their local area.
Craigslist Craigslist is a free online marketplace for classified ads and community notices. You can buy, sell, or trade furniture.
Chairish Chairish is an online marketplace for buying and selling high-end vintage and new home furnishings, art, and decor.
Local Consignment Stores Check online to see if you have a consignment business nearby. These stores will take furniture items and then sell them on the owner's behalf in exchange for a percentage of the sale price.
Classified Ad Advertise your used sofa in a newspaper. Call the publication to place your ad over the phone or type it into their website form for placing ads online.

Where can I donate my sofa?

Donating a couch is a great way to keep it out of landfill while doing something good for your community. There are plenty of organisations that have use for furniture, from charities like Goodwill or Habitat For Humanity to local homeless shelters.

As with selling a sofa, we recommend Googling what is most effective or convenient for your local area! But, with that being said, here are a list of places we recommend:

Goodwill Goodwill sells second hand goods at affordable prices. Their retail stores fund programs that help thousands of people each year find jobs and reach financial stability, while their stores allow people to find quality items at reasonable prices.
Habitat For Humanity Habitat ReStores is an offshoot of Habitat For Humanity, selling reusable items to the public, including furniture, appliances, and building materials. Habitat ReStores proceeds goes to support Habitat for Humanity's mission.
The Salvation Army The Salvation Army operates second hand stores, selling high quality donated items, including furniture, at affordable prices. Their stores fund the charity's overall mission to support and aid vulnerable people.
Resupply Resupply is a a donation pickup service that hauls away and donates household goods and furniture for you, taking care of the logistics.

Do I have to do anything before selling or donating my sofa?

Yes! There are a few things to consider before getting rid of a sofa, loveseat, sleeper, or futon.

    • Assess the condition: Consider whether your chosen sofa is beyond salvation or if it can be donated or repurposed. If it's damaged or unusable, it's probably the right time to say goodbye.
    • Clean it: If it's destined for the dump, don't worry about this step! But if you plan on donating or selling your couch or sleeper sofa, give it a thorough cleaning. This will make it more appealing and usable for potential buyers or donation centers.
    • Safely dismantle or cover it: If you're handling the disposal yourself, disassemble the couch if possible to make it easier to transport. Alternatively, cover it with plastic wrap or blankets to protect it from dirt and damage during the moving process.

Remember, getting rid of a couch is just the beginning of a new chapter in your furniture story. Embrace the change and get ready to find the perfect replacement!

How do I get rid of a sectional couch?

How do I get rid of a large couch?

Finally, we tackle the "big" question (pun intended) of how to physically get rid of a large couch or sectional.

    Measure, measure, measure.

It's essential to take measurements regardless of couch size. You need this information to get it through doors, hallways, and onto a truck! It's also helpful if you sell the couch to prevent miscommunications and upset for the prospective buyer.

Get it Out of Your House

    Option 1: Gather Your Friends

Rally (or bribe) a team of friends who love you enough to move heavy things. Together, you can help maneuver the sofa out of the house without paying professional movers. A few strong arms make light work!

    Option 2: Hire Professionals

Hire professional furniture removal superheroes to swoop in and save the day. These experts can remove your couch for $100-250 (on average) and save you the hassle and labor of doing it yourself.
