Indoor-outdoor living spaces are all the rage right now! (It’s true. I saw it on Selling Sunset.) Making full use of your patio, porch, or rooftop is great for maximizing your living space, and you have an excuse to shop for a new, cool sofa. Double win!
Recently, I teamed up with interior designer Herman King Castle III to embark on the challenge of creating the ultimate indoor-outdoor living area for his client. The apartment had a modestly sized patio that needed a little love (aka the perfect sectional sofa) to transform it into the ideal spot for entertaining, relaxing, and catching some Cali sunshine. We considered different types of furniture to ensure the best fit for the space.
Herman is an LA-based interior designer whose professional style reflects his personal fashion: colorful, chic, and always very comfortable. His design strategy focuses on using every inch of the space, letting his artistic flair shine through in the details. With the combined powers of his design expertise and my couch knowledge, this project couldn’t have been more promising!
He chose the Basso Modular Sofa from Expand Furniture, a lightweight, boldly-colored sectional that promised plush comfort and easy reconfiguration. We decided to put it to the test and see if this technicolor sectional could transform an average patio into an indoor-outdoor oasis. Spoiler alert: We weren’t disappointed.
What's the Deal With Indoor Outdoor Living?
Indoor-outdoor living offers the best of both worlds. By integrating patios, balconies, and other exterior areas with your main living space, you can create a seamless flow between indoors and outdoors, extending your home’s functionality and aesthetic appeal. Selecting the right outdoor patio furniture, such as wicker or aluminum pieces, enhances these spaces by providing durability, comfort, and aesthetic appeal.
Whether hosting friends for dinner on the patio or relaxing with a good book while surrounded by fresh air, these spaces can offer relaxation and entertainment opportunities that feel expansive and luxurious.
This type of design focuses on creating a sense of fluidity. Open layouts and complementary décor create a seamless transition between your indoor living room and outdoor areas. Selecting the right furniture helps achieve this harmony, starting, of course, with the perfect sofa. However, with a unique project comes unique challenges: The sofa you select for an indoor-outdoor living space must balance comfort, durability, and style.
Why Purchase a Modular Sofa?
If you want a living space that evolves with your needs, a modular sofa is a great investment. Their adaptable design makes them perfect for dynamic outdoor areas where use and layout can change frequently.
Modular sofas also come with a variety of advantages, including:
-
Easy Reconfiguration: Adjust the layout to suit your space or occasion. (The Basso offers lightweight pieces that are specifically designed to be moved around at-will).
-
Customization: Add or remove sections to match your comfort and style needs.
-
Future-Proof Investment: Unlike a loveseat or sofa with a fixed size, if you find yourself moving to a larger or smaller space, you can change the size of your sectional to fit without having to buy an entirely new piece of furniture.
For this project, Herman and I knew that adaptability was the name of the game. By choosing a sectional, his client has the option to switch up the layout or expand the seating as they see fit. With any luck, this will be their indoor-outdoor sofa for a long time!
Pitfalls to Avoid When Buying an Indoor-Outdoor Sofa
Buying outdoor furniture might seem straightforward, but there are some common mistakes that can impact the functionality and comfort of your outdoor area.
-
Buying Oversized Sofas: Purchasing a couch that is too big for your patio or balcony will make the space feel cramped. Balcony and patio furniture should be smaller, generally speaking.
-
Inappropriate Materials: Certain materials are unsuitable for partially outdoor settings and will degrade when exposed to UV rays. Choosing the wrong fabric can lead to faster wear and tear.
-
Heavy, Non-Modular Designs: Furniture that can’t be moved easily is not ideal for a versatile patio area. Lightweight and modular designs, like the Basso, are much more suitable.
-
Neglecting Proper Care: Proper care, such as waterproofing wicker furniture and using protective covers, is essential for maintaining the longevity and appearance of outdoor furniture.
-
Failing to Store Furniture Properly: Storing furniture in a cool, dry location, such as a garage or basement, when not in use helps prolong its lifespan and keeps it in good condition through seasonal changes.
Choosing the Right Materials for Your Sofa & Considering Your Environment
This might sound incredibly obvious, but when choosing an indoor-outdoor modular sofa, you must think about where you’re putting it.
If you live in Hilo, Hawaii (aka the rainiest place in the U.S.A. - look it up), and your indoor-outdoor space is exposed to constant moisture and harsh conditions, you must use furniture specifically built for outdoor use. Acrylic fabric, rust-proof aluminum, and quick-drying cushions are all essential. Wicker is also a durable material option for outdoor furniture, known for its resilience and easy maintenance.
In our case, Herman and I live in Los Angeles, where it rains 36 out of 365 days, so moisture is not on our radar. Sun and UV rays, however, are incredibly damaging. The Basso Modular Sofa by Expand Furniture isn’t specifically UV-resistant, but we checked to ensure the patio had shade from direct sunlight. Once confirmed, we were good to go!
For those also looking at non-outdoor sofas or sectionals, check the material content to learn how sunlight-friendly it might be. A good rule of thumb is never to place indoor furniture in direct sunlight.
Why the Right Materials Matter for Indoor and Outdoor Living
The materials you choose will determine how your sofa will perform in various environments. Are you working with a poolside patio? A shaded back deck? A sun-drenched rooftop? Consider how much sun, shelter, moisture, and attention your space gets.
Outdoor Sofas
Outdoor conditions require specific materials to ensure longevity and comfort:
-
Water-Resistant Fabrics: Crucial to withstand rain and moisture.
-
UV-Resistant Materials: Prevent fading caused by direct sunlight.
-
Durable Frames: Aluminum frames and weather-treated fabrics are ideal to handle temperature fluctuations, humidity, and exposure to wind or debris.
Indoor Sofas
Indoor sofas don't need to (and cannot) endure the elements, but comfort and style are essential:
-
Luxurious Materials: Velvet, microfiber, or other soft fabrics add a cozy feel.
-
Focus on Comfort: Since indoor sofas are protected from the weather, they can prioritize comfort with soft, non-weather-resistant fabrics.
Hybrid Use Considerations
Some sofas are versatile enough for both indoor and outdoor use, like the Basso Modular Sofa. Here's what to keep in mind:
-
Extra Care Needed: Sofas used outdoors may require protective covers or need cushions brought inside during bad weather.
-
Trade-Offs: Hybrid sofas are flexible, but they might not fully optimize for either environment—meaning they may lack some indoor luxury or outdoor durability.
Tip: Choose materials based on how you plan to use your space. If you want something that can do double duty, be ready to provide extra care when using it outdoors.

Tips for Maintenance & Longevity with Outdoor Patio Furniture
Keeping your indoor-outdoor sofa in great shape means taking the right steps to maintain your patio furniture.
One of the qualities Herman chose The Basso Modular Sofa for is how low maintenance it is. But even easy-to-clean sofas need a little care! He shared some simple tips for maintaining sofas, saying “All you need is a damp cloth for spot cleaning. You can add some mild detergent, but avoid anything with harsh chemicals to prevent damage or fading.”
When in doubt, here are the three important maintenance steps to consider:
- Spot Clean Regularly: Use a damp cloth to clean up any spills as soon as they happen.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Stick to mild detergents that won’t fade or damage the fabric.
- Cover When Not in Use: If possible, use a cover to protect your patio furniture from prolonged exposure to the elements.
Additionally, store your patio furniture in a cool, dry place to prevent issues like mold and mildew.
By following these steps, you can keep your sofas looking fresh and stylish for years to come.
Making the Most of Your (Sort Of) Outdoor Space
Designing an indoor-outdoor living space is about creating a cohesive environment that feels like an extension of your home.
How to Avoid Making Your Space Feel Too Small
Choosing the right scale and layout for your furniture is essential. Avoid large, bulky couches that make the space feel cramped. Instead, for patio furniture, go for low-profile, modular designs that can be reconfigured. The Basso Modular Sofa is a perfect example—its adaptability allows it to fit a variety of patio and indoor-outdoor spaces without overwhelming the area.
Tips for avoiding a cramped patio:
-
Opt for Low-Profile Furniture: Furniture with a lower profile creates a sense of openness.
-
Use Modular Pieces: Modular furniture can be rearranged to suit different occasions, helping keep the space functional.
-
Add Vertical Elements: Incorporate vertical decor, like hanging plants or shelves, to draw the eye upward and create the illusion of more space.
Benefits of Lightweight Furniture
Lightweight furniture is ideal for spaces like a patio or balcony because it allows you to move pieces around based on the occasion. In Herman's client's case, entertaining was a key requirement, so being able to move the sectional pieces to suit a good party was a must.
We were pleased with how lightweight the Basso was. It's weighted to be secure, but can be manoeuvred by a single person easily.
Some other benefits of lightweight sofas include:
-
Easy Rearrangement: Lightweight pieces can be easily moved to accommodate different needs, such as entertaining guests or making space for other activities.
-
Reduced Wear and Tear: Moving heavy furniture can damage surfaces like decks and patios, but lightweight options are less likely to cause scuffs or dents.
-
Versatility: Lightweight furniture is perfect for those who enjoy changing their outdoor setup frequently to keep things fresh and interesting.
Layout Ideas Using The Basso
Designing your space is all about making the most of what you have. With a modular sofa like the Basso from Expand Furniture, you have endless possibilities to create comfortable, flexible arrangements. Here are a few layout ideas to inspire you:
1. L-Shape Patio Layout
If you have a medium-sized patio, consider setting up your sofa in an L-shape. This layout is perfect for creating a cozy corner where people can gather comfortably, with enough space to add a small coffee table in the center. This arrangement encourages conversation and makes the patio feel like an outdoor living room.
2. Balcony Setup for Compact Spaces
For narrow or compact balconies, split the sofa into individual pieces. Place a single module along one side of the balcony, use the corner module as a main seating area, and position the ottoman separately as a footrest or additional seating. This layout helps maximize a smaller space while ensuring comfort and functionality.
3. U-Shape Arrangement for Entertaining
If you're hosting a rooftop gathering, arranging all three modules into a U-shape provides plenty of seating for multiple guests. This configuration keeps everyone connected, with an open central space where you can add a table for snacks and drinks. It's perfect for social gatherings, allowing everyone to interact and enjoy the atmosphere easily.
4. Flexible Chaise Lounge Setup
Another option for a versatile space is to create a chaise lounge setup by positioning the ottoman directly in front of the single or corner module. This provides a relaxing spot where you can stretch out under the sun or stars. The modular design allows you to change things up easily, adapting the layout to your needs—whether you want to lounge solo or make room for a few friends.
The versatility of the Basso Modular Sofa makes it easy to adapt and change your layout whenever you need, giving you an outdoor space that evolves with you.
What Sofa Works Best For My Space?
Different typical indoor-outdoor spaces have individual needs, and choosing the right sofa is crucial to achieving a comfortable, functional setup.
-
Balconies: Choose compact, lightweight sofas or patio furniture that don't take up much space but still offer comfort.
-
Patios: Depending on the patio size, opt for mid-sized modular pieces of patio furniture that can be arranged into different shapes.
-
Rooftops: For a rooftop setup, go with low-profile, adaptable sofas like the Basso Modular Sofa, which can be easily moved in response to changing weather conditions.
So, After All That...
Regardless of the home you have, creating the perfect indoor-outdoor space is all about balance—choosing the right materials, the appropriate size and scale of furniture, and designing for both style and function. Modular options like the Basso Modular Sofa are a great, flexible choice to fit your lifestyle and evolve with your needs.
For Herman and I, the mission to create a vibrant, exciting space that helped his client access his patio in a more comfortable, purposeful way was a success.
