    I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Randi Strelitz, one of the founders of The Dump: America's best-kept discount furniture secret.

    It all began during the Great Depression when a local Virginian company, Haynes Furniture, was sold to Randi's husband's grandfather. The resilient business flourished despite the tough times, selling furniture to hardworking Americans. As the operation grew, the family needed a way to shift excess stock, opening a warehouse to store and sell off their overflow. Though it was unnamed, this humble warehouse would eventually become The Dump.

    “The Dump was born as an outlet for Haynes, and it was open three days a week, all about the deal and no frills,” Randi explained. 

    She went on to remark that although there were no perks like financing, delivery, or a fancy showroom, the nascent brand prided itself on having quality furniture and unbeatable prices.  

    Expansion Driven by Opportunity

    With things going so well in Virginia, it was clear that The Dump had hit on something special. No longer a dinky warehouse anymore; this was a full-flung, thriving outlet operation. It was time to expand.  

    In a bid for cheap real estate and a promising market, The Dump’s first big move was into Philadelphia. They went all-in with tongue-in-cheek billboard ads saying “Philly gets dumped.” And in an ironic twist of fate on opening day, Philadelphia really did get dumped on—a snowstorm hit the city. But despite the blizzard, the place was packed! People were ready to brave the storm for the unbeatable deals. That was the moment, Randy says, they knew they were onto something.

    Their expansion success continued, spanning everywhere they could find an exciting market. Since starting, The Dump furniture outlet has opened nine stores and two dedicated warehouses. And through all this astronomical success, their mission has stayed true—bringing people top-quality furniture at the most affordable prices.

     

    The Dump’s Unique Approach to Buying

    The Dump is built on the excitement of finding a deal. Randi talked about how much she loves the hunt and the thrill of stumbling upon something extraordinary to bring back to their stores.

    “We always paid our bills, had a lot of capital, and people liked that. We were able to make deals, and it worked. It was great. It’s still evolving,” she said.

    This “treasure hunt” approach has turned The Dump into a destination. Unlike traditional stores with a consistent catalog of items, people come to The Dump not knowing what they’ll find but knowing it’ll be worth it.

    A recent jewel in The Dump's crown has been their acquisition of high-end American furniture brand Michell Gold & Bob Williams. Known for their stylish, modern designs and top-quality craftsmanship, the brand built a reputation for comfortable, elegant home furnishings. It's been one of Randi's biggest triumphs, skillfully negotiating her way to success.

    She explained how a liquidator approached her about the Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams inventory, and she knew this was her moment. Mitchell Gold had over 30 stores, and they had gone bankrupt. With this news, Randi called up Satya, the owner of Surya, a rug company she’d done business with for years. He was bidding on the intellectual property, while Randi was focused on the inventory. They joined forces, and together, they secured the deal.

    The result? Luxury pieces from a top designer brand are now at The Dump for up to 70% off.

    Every business has its challenges, and The Dump is no exception. But what I found fascinating is how they turn these challenges into opportunities.     “We enjoy the buy, we enjoy the marketing. We do not love the operations,” Randi explains.

    “The opportunities are plentiful at the moment. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it quite like this before,” Randi said excitedly.
