“We really are a true, as far as I know, the only true outlet there. A number of retailers have tried to copy us but they turn quickly into regular furniture stores. [At The Dump] Customers get amazing deals,”  says The Dump founder and CEO EJ Strelitz.

The Dump Furniture isn’t your typical outlet store. Forget a junky warehouse or some desperate ploy to sell dated low-end furniture: This is a place to find high-quality, designer couches, sectionals, and more! All at unbelievable discounts.

Founded by family man EJ Strelitz, The Dump Furniture redefines how people buy furniture, offering something rare: Luxury furniture made accessible to the everyday buyer. Seizing opportunities where others saw challenges, Strelitz has created an outlet franchise unlike any other, quickly becoming one of America's best furniture bargains.

But how did it all begin, and what makes The Dump different from any other outlet or retail store? Let's explore the story behind The Dump Furniture—its beginnings, its one-of-a-kind approach to the industry, and why the brand is our go-to to find top-notch furniture without the top-notch price tag.

The Dump’s Beginnings: How It All Started

The Dump's origins are grounded in family values and a vision to do things differently. What started as a modest effort to clear out excess inventory soon became a bold experiment in rethinking what a furniture store could be. EJ Strelitz and his team transformed an unconventional space into a treasure trove for high-quality furniture at amazing prices.

Origins in a Clearance Warehouse

The Dump began in 1985 as a clearance outlet for Haynes Furniture, another family-run business owned by EJ Strelitz. Haynes needed a way to offload overstock and discontinued items, so they created a space specifically for this purpose: A no-frills clearance center in an old grocery store warehouse. It wasn't named 'The Dump' quite yet, but the foundation was laid for what would soon become an outlet empire.

“We actually took this old grocery store warehouse which had train tracks running through the middle of the store. It was in a crazy industrial park off the beaten path location,” says EJ.

It was an unusual and somewhat industrial setting, but it had a distinct charm that attracted customers looking for something different.

Becoming More Than Just a Clearance Store

Within the first year, it became evident that this early version of The Dump had potential far beyond clearing out Haynes Furniture’s excess stock. It was time for a major pivot.

Instead of relying solely on overflow from their primary store, EJ and his team now sought to expand their stock, buying directly from manufacturers, closeouts, showroom samples, and liquidations.

“Within the first year, we started buying specifically for The Dump instead of just sending over our excess stock. We began looking for opportunities across the industry to find off-price deals, where companies needed to quickly move their goods,” EJ explains.

And they didn't stop there. The family expanded the concept of what an outlet could be, developing the warehouse and evolving the quirky space into a true destination for furniture shoppers in the area.

    Fixing the Family Business

The shift from a simple clearance center to a true destination for furniture deals wasn’t without its challenges.

EJ explains that The Dump's early days as a solely family business were tough. Everybody was involved. The separation between work and personal life ran thin, with the business's success often impacting his mood and mental health.

“We wanted something with its own legs, that wasn’t just dependent on family members slugging their guts out at work,” says EJ.

That’s why The Dump (as it currently exists) was created. Solely relying on the time and sacrifice of family members wasn't working. But with a dedicated team and structure, the business steadily took on an identity beyond the family.

Why The Dump’s Business Model Is Different

Unlike industries dominated by a few big players, the furniture business is highly fragmented, with even the largest companies only holding a small share of the market. While certain brands have tried to become the dominant player, the industry remains resistant to consolidation, making it a challenging space to operate in.

EJ spotted an opportunity to use this unique market composition to his advantage. With so many competing brands in the space, he jumped on the supply side, buying up liquidated stock, showroom samples, and clearance items from the surplus of products available in the industry.

Supply-Side Strategy & Shopping For Opportunities

The Dump doesn’t operate like a typical furniture store—and that’s what makes it so special. Rather than focusing on customer demand and trying to fulfill it, EJ describes The Dump as a supply-driven business. The idea is simple: look for the best deals available, then bring those deals to the customers.

“We’re supply-driven. We wait for the right supply, and we’re open to wherever the opportunities are,” says EJ.

This supply-side strategy means that The Dump is constantly changing—something that both customers and employees love. The thrill of shopping at The Dump lies in knowing that you’re likely to find something exceptional, and you may never see that piece again if you pass it up.

The Dump’s supply-side business strategy provides genuine value to customers by being in the right place at the right time and knowing how to seize opportunities.

The Advantages of a Supply-Side Approach

    1. Genuine Off-Price Goods: Unlike typical outlet stores, The Dump doesn't sell downgraded versions made specifically for outlets. Every item is authentic—luxury goods at a fraction of the cost.
    2. Constant Inventory Changes: Because The Dump buys based on supply opportunities, their inventory is constantly evolving. Customers can always expect new surprises each time they visit.
    3. High-Value Savings: The Dump often focuses on higher-quality items, where the savings are in absolute dollars—making it worth the drive for customers seeking exceptional value.

The Dump vs. Other Outlet Stores

Not all outlets are created equal, and The Dump is proof of that. While other outlets may be all about appearances, The Dump offers genuine quality and true savings.

Real Goods, Real Deals: Not Knockoffs

Furniture outlets often carry lower-quality versions of products that are made specifically for outlet sales. Many cut corners—using cheaper materials, scaled-down designs, and shortcuts in manufacturing to produce products that resemble the high-end pieces sold in main retail locations. The result? Customers think they get a great deal, only to find that the furniture isn’t as durable or luxurious as advertised.

At The Dump, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

“We’re not in the business of selling knockoffs. When you buy from us, you’re getting the real thing,” says EJ.

The Dump rejects low quality and proudly offers authentic pieces—genuine overstock, showroom models, and discontinued lines. They have relationships with top furniture manufacturers that give them premiere access to their items. You can find top-grain leather sectionals, hand-carved dining tables, high-tech reclining sofas, and more that would usually sell at premium prices available at The Dump simply because they need to be moved fast.

The Dump’s relationships with top furniture manufacturers mean that they can get their hands on items that never make it to other discount outlets—pieces that would normally sell at premium prices, but are available here simply because they need to be moved fast.

When customers walk through the doors of a Dump outlet, they can be confident they’re investing in furniture built to last, designed with care, and made from quality materials. This dedication to authentic, high-quality furniture at outlet prices makes The Dump a revolutionary outlet experience.

High-End Furniture at a Bargain: What Makes The Dump Special

Twice a year, the furniture industry gathers for massive showcases of the latest furniture lines in High Point, North Carolina, and Las Vegas. And, after the showrooms clear out, The Dump is there to make deals.

“We buy from the major furniture shows where manufacturers show off their products. We're buying next season's furniture at a huge discount.” says EJ.

      Designer Couches, Sectionals, and More

The Dump’s inventory spans a wide range of high-quality categories.

Why It’s Fun to Shop at The Dump

      Ever-Changing Inventory Keeps It Interesting

The inventory at The Dump Furniture store is constantly changing—something that both customers and employees love.

“I think people like it. I think there's kind of constant change. You can come in one day, and a couple of weeks later, you're going to see a lot of different stuff than you did the first trip,” says EJ.

A True Outlet Experience: No Smoke and Mirrors

EJ points out that many stores use the term "outlet" as a marketing gimmick. The Dump is a true outlet offering 30-80% off original retail prices without compromising quality.

"We really are a true, as far as I know, the only true outlet there. A number of retailers have tried to copy us but they turn quickly into regular furniture stores. [At The Dump] Customers get amazing deals,”  says EJ.

The Dump’s Value Proposition: Why You Should Visit Today

The Dump was built on the idea that everyone deserves access to high-end furniture at affordable prices. By embracing a supply-side approach, The Dump secures incredible deals and passes those savings directly to customers, ensuring that each visit offers something truly special.
