There's no hiding it: The world of furniture is changing.
Finding a sofa is no longer purely a matter of cost and convenience. In a world of growing climate concerns and a better collective understanding of sustainable production, shopping for a new sofa is about making good choices for the individual and the planet. Even within my experience in the furniture industry, I've noticed a growing interest in eco-friendly sofas and a demand for more transparency about materials and production.
But what do these changes mean for the industry? How are companies growing to meet this demand?
To learn more, I sat down with Travis Nagle and Ryan Schultz, the founders of Medley Home, a company disrupting the old status quo and crafting sustainable furniture. They shared their insights on what makes a sofa truly eco-friendly.
Medley Home's Approach to Sustainability
Travis and Ryan founded the company with a desire to go beyond creating beautiful furniture. Their ethos for Medley was (and is) to craft built-to-last furniture using cleaner production methods, local manufacturing, and eco-certified materials. All without straying from quality or comfort.
As Medley co-founder Travis explains, "We want to change how an industry thinks about making furniture and also change how people think about what goes into their homes."
Clicking around their website for just 10 seconds, it's clear this commitment to sustainable furniture connects to every aspect of their production process. They proudly share their use of eco-certified materials, zero harmful flame retardant chemicals, and manufacturing using factories based in the USA. It's a refreshing sight in an industry choked with so many harmful practices.
Choosing the Right Sofa Materials
Medley Furniture carefully selects sustainable, high-performing materials. By prioritizing natural, renewable resources and avoiding harmful chemicals, they seriously reduce their environmental impact while delivering top-tier products.
"We’ve done a ton of research and testing to create a new way of making couches that uses natural materials. They check two big boxes: healthier planet and healthier home," Ryan emphasizes their dedication to research and testing.
There are three main categories of their materials:
- FSC-Certified Wood: Their sofa frames feature FSC-certified wood construction sourced from responsibly managed forests that prioritize environmental and social responsibility.
- Natural Latex Foam: Medley offers natural latex sofa cushions instead of conventional petroleum-based foam. This plant-based foam is incredibly durable, comfortable, and biodegradable.
- Organic Fabrics: They offer a range of upholstery options made from organic cotton, linen, and wool. These fabrics are created without harmful pesticides and chemicals, making them better for your health and the environment.
Natural Latex Foam vs. Petroleum-Based Cushions
The filling of sofa cushions makes a big difference to comfort and sustainability (who'd have thought). Medley Home champions using natural latex foam, a plant-based alternative to the petroleum-based cushions in most conventional sofas. It certainly sounds impressive to me, but for those without a chemistry degree, what does it really mean?
Let's break down the key differences:
1. Source and Environmental Impact
Natural latex is made from the sap of rubber trees (similarly to how you’d tap for maple syrup). As a renewable resource, natural latex is much kinder to the environment than petroleum-based foam, which relies on fossil fuels and energy-intensive processes.
2. Health and Indoor Air Quality
Natural latex is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to mold and dust mites. It also doesn't release harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that can affect indoor air quality. Petroleum-based foam contains toxic chemicals that can off-gas over time, potentially causing health issues and contributing to indoor air pollution.
3. Comfort and Durability
Natural latex is known for its exceptional comfort and durability. It's bouncy, supportive, and breathable. It also holds its shape well over time, preventing sagging and indentations. While petroleum-based foam can initially be comfortable, it tends to break down and lose shape more quickly. This can lead to a less supportive seating experience over time.
4. Biodegradability
At the end of its lifespan, natural latex can be broken down and composted, returning to the earth without leaving harmful residues. Petroleum-based foam takes a very long time to decompose and actively contributes to landfill waste.
Medley Couches & Wool: Not a Baaaaaa-d Combo
Medley couches often feature wool as an upholstery option or as a filling material in their cushions.
"We source our wool from New Zealand because of their regenerative agriculture and high-standard practices for raising sheep. It’s a superior product, and we use it to wrap the frame. Instead of polyurethane foam, we substitute it with wool, which, to our knowledge, no one else is doing quite like us," said Ryan regarding their careful sourcing of wool.
Wool is a fantastic natural fiber with many benefits, including its durability, natural flame resistance, and comfortable, temperature-regulating quality. It is also renewable and biodegradable, contributing to the eco-friendly design of Medley's sofas.
Dispelling the Myth: Eco-Friendly Sofas ARE Comfortable
Some people assume that eco-friendly sofas might compromise comfort in favor of sustainability. Who hasn't been disappointed by a paper straw disintegrating and wondered if switching from plastic was worth it? But this assumption is not true (I mean for a sofa, the jury is out on the straws)! Many people find that natural latex foam, wool, and other sustainable materials provide superior comfort and support compared to conventional materials. Plus, you can relax extra knowing that your choice is kind to the earth!
Key Elements of an Eco-Friendly Sofa
1. Sustainable Materials: The Terms You Need to Know
- FSC-Certified Wood: This certification ensures that the wood comes from responsibly managed forests.
- Natural Latex Foam: This renewable and biodegradable material is a superior alternative to conventional foam.
- Organic and Natural Fabrics: Fabrics like organic cotton, linen, and wool are grown without harmful pesticides and chemicals.
- Low-VOC or Water-Based Finishes: These finishes release fewer harmful chemicals into the air, improving indoor air quality.
2. Durable Construction
An eco-friendly sofa should be an investment that lasts for years to come. Look for sofas with sturdy frames, high-quality joinery, and durable upholstery. A Medley sofa, for example, that lasts longer means less waste in the long run.
3. Responsible Manufacturing
It's crucial to consider a sofa's entire life cycle, from sourcing the materials to the manufacturing process and eventual disposal. Don't be afraid to be discerning. Find a sofa that's built to last!
Sustainable furniture companies will prioritize responsible manufacturing practices that minimize waste, reduce emissions, and protect the environment.
Travis emphasizes Medley's focus on eco-conscious material sourcing, stating "We also replace synthetic materials like poly-based liners and wraps inside with hemp, jute, and cotton—natural fibers that are equally, if not more, durable."
What Are the Benefits of Choosing an Eco-Friendly Sofa?
Investing in an eco-friendly sofa is a win-win for your home and the planet. Enjoying your new piece comes with a wealth of benefits:
- Reduced Environmental Impact: You're helping to conserve resources and reduce pollution.
- Healthier Indoor Air Quality: Non-toxic materials and finishes create a healthier home environment.
- Support for Ethical Businesses: You're supporting companies that prioritize sustainability and ethical practices.
- Durability and Longevity: Eco-friendly sofas are often made with high-quality materials and construction, meaning they'll last longer and look better doing it!
How to Identify an Eco-Friendly Sofa
With so many companies jumping on the "green" bandwagon, it can be tricky to identify truly chemical-free, sustainable furniture. Here are some tips to help you navigate the market:
- Look for Certifications: Certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) provide assurance that the materials meet strict environmental and social standards.
- Research the Brand: Take some time to learn about the company's sustainability initiatives. Do they have a transparent supply chain? Do they prioritize ethical sourcing and fair labor practices?
- Ask Questions: Don't be afraid to reach out to the company with specific questions about their materials, manufacturing processes, and environmental impact.

Alex: Um, who would you say is your mom's favorite, like, between the two of you?
Travis: I think younger brother might get the award—that's Travis.
Ryan: I wasn't going to presume!
0:09 - What Really Makes a Sofa Eco-Friendly?
Alex: What makes a sofa eco-friendly? Everybody talks about it, but I don't think anyone really knows. So I went straight to the source—I got a hold of the founders of the brand Medley Home, one of the top sustainable and eco-friendly couch makers in the market. Their answers are really going to surprise you. And spoiler alert, they're brothers. Welcome, Travis and welcome, Ryan. Thank you for joining me!
Travis & Ryan: Thanks for having us!
0:30 - Greenwashing Myths & Medley’s Authentic Approach
Alex: There’s this concept of greenwashing out there where everyone has a sustainability story or an eco-friendly story. I mean, even Walmart has figured that out. Just by donating money to a cause one time, you can sort of place that label on yourself. But you guys are one of the few brands actually doing what you’re saying.
Ryan: Yeah, we've had a mantra for a long time: Healthy Planet, Healthy Home. I think it came from growing up with our father, who’s an energy specialist. He was a big fan of solar and clean energy back in the '70s, and now he’s seeing that come to life. He instilled a lot of those values in us, and we saw an opportunity early on to get into sustainability—how can we protect natural resources, make things biodegradable, and reduce chemicals wherever possible?
1:40 - Breaking Down Eco-Friendly Sofa Materials
Ryan: We’ve done a ton of research and testing to create a new way of making couches that uses natural materials. They check two big boxes: healthier planet and healthier home.
Alex: What are the things that make an eco-friendly couch?
Travis: 99.999% of all furniture is made with polyurethane foam, which is petroleum-based.
Alex: Can you tell me more about why petroleum is so bad?
Travis: Well, this gets into chemistry. (Laughs) Hold on, I need my glasses! There are a lot of ingredients in there that are not at all safe. As polyurethane foam deteriorates, it turns into dust, gets mixed into the air, and it creates a cycle that’s harmful to your home and the planet.
2:36 - Why Wool is the Secret to Sustainable Comfort
Travis: But there's another option: natural latex, made from the sap of rubber trees, similar to how you’d tap for maple syrup. We use it for seat cushions and parts of the frame, providing maximum comfort and durability without petroleum-based materials. It’s also more comfortable and lasts longer from our experience.
Alex: Let's talk about wool. That's a huge part of what you guys are doing now.
Ryan: Yeah, we source our wool from New Zealand because of their regenerative agriculture and high-standard practices for raising sheep. It’s a superior product, and we use it to wrap the frame. Instead of polyurethane foam, we substitute it with wool, which to our knowledge, no one else is doing quite like us. For cushions and back pillows, we use fluffy wool fiber instead of polyfiber or down.
3:20 - Ditching Synthetics: The Power of Natural Fibers
Travis: We also replace synthetic materials like poly-based liners and wraps inside with hemp, jute, and cotton—natural fibers that are equally, if not more, durable. On the outside, we offer a variety of fabrics and leathers that are well-certified and free from harmful chemicals.
3:47 - Medley’s Mission for Non-Toxic, Long-Lasting Furniture
Alex: You had me at hemp! And I know we’re on the West Coast, so I’m not going to ask any more questions there. (Laughs) I also think it’s super interesting about your dad. He must be pretty proud of you guys and what you’re doing.
Ryan: Oh yeah, for sure. He’s definitely proud that we’ve taken his teachings and applied them to this area. He’s happy we’re doing it for sure.
