That’s a win for the environment, and it’s something we can all feel good about. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Americans threw about 2.2 million tons of furniture and furnishing in the 1960s, and this grew to 12.1 million tons by 2018. While I can’t find specific numbers on how buyback programs help in the reduction of furniture waste, I am certain such action is a step in the right direction.

By taking back their old products, brands can build customer loyalty, improve their reputation, and even save money by refurbishing and reselling furniture. When I ran the popular online retailer, Apt2B, we employed a couch trade-in program before they were popular. In truth, we got back a lot of unusable pieces of furniture but some we were able to donate to local charities instead of putting in the dumpster. Still, the value was in attracting customers who had a decent sofa that they weren't 100% ready to get rid of- being able to trade it in for a few hundred dollar credit towards their new sofa pushed them over the edge and allowed them to be mentally open to the idea of buying a new one.

One Thing To Decide On: Maximizing Value vs. Sustainability

Those are the pros of furniture buyback programs. What about the cons? If there’s one thing worth noting when it comes to such initiatives is that there’s no magic formula for determining the exact value of a used couch or other furniture. They need to factor in things like wear and tear, current market trends, and the cost of refurbishing.

So while you might get a decent offer, it’s unlikely to match what you might get selling it privately. If you’re looking to maximize your return, selling your couch yourself might be the better option, but if convenience and sustainability are your top priorities, a buyback program is definitely worth considering. Just be prepared for a potential drop in the value of your trade-in furniture.
